A.R.T./New York is committed to advancing disability equity and access as core components of our work and our responsibility to the theatre field. We understand disability as an integral part of human diversity and approach access as an ongoing practice—one that requires attention, accountability, and care over time.
Our approach to accessibility extends beyond physical access and accommodations. We examine how disability equity is reflected in our organizational culture, policies, programs, communications, and the systems that shape participation in the field. This includes moving away from compliance-based frameworks and towards baked-in access practices that inform our creativity, culture and systems as theatremakers.
This work is informed by lived experience, collaboration, and shared learning. Guidance from disabled artists, administrators, and consultants—alongside cross-departmental work through the Accessibility Stream—helps shape how accessibility is embedded across A.R.T./New York’s operations and initiatives.
We recognize that disability equity work is not static. As language, best practices, and community needs evolve, A.R.T./New York remains committed to reflection, adaptation, and growth in how we center access across our organization and the broader NYC theatre ecosystem.
