Who We Are & What We Do
Founded in 1972 to promote community and collaboration within the performing arts, The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York) is an arts service organization dedicated to supporting New York City’s vibrant community of nonprofit theatres. We are uniquely committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of diversity and inclusion among employees, artists, Board, contractors, and the community of citizens we serve.
We provide direct services to our community:
- SPACE: With over two decades of experience, A.R.T./New York is a leader in offering subsidized space to nonprofit theatres in NYC. A.R.T./New York operates 40 offices, 16 studio spaces, and two state-of-the-art performance spaces (both of which are fully accessible to disabled audiences), all for low-cost rental fees. Each year, we provide subsidized office and rehearsal space to 37 tenant companies and 1,000+ unique hourly or weekly renters. The A.R.T./New York Theatres host productions by 20+ companies annually, reaching over 10,000 audience members.
- PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: A.R.T./NY takes a holistic approach to professional development, providing a variety of resources to support the workers who power NYC’s theatrical ecosystem at every point in their careers. Through technical assistance, community engagement and support, and skill-building resources, A.R.T./NY provides comprehensive services in direct response to the changing realities of the field.
- FUNDING: A.R.T./New York is a trusted regranting partner with decades of experience, allocating over $600,000 annually to organizations across the field. The Bridge Funding for the Arts loan program helps meet acute cash flow needs.

In addition to direct service provision, A.R.T./New York serves every aspect of the theatre sector’s complex ecosystem. These efforts includes data and research initiatives, participation in advocacy coalitions, and extended partnerships with our colleagues across the sector to amplify solutions, deepen relationships, and foster creativity.
